The Action of Statins on Prostate Cancer: A Clinical Overview.

Abstract

Author(s): Dr. Iohannis Patrikios

Statins are one of the most commonly prescribed medicines and are known to lower
the level of cholesterol in blood. High cholesterol can increase your risk of
developing cardiovascular disease, which includes conditions such as coronary heart
disease. This is achieved by the inhibition of the HMG-CoA reductase. Prostate
cancer is the most common cancer in men and usually develops slowly, so there may
be no signs for many years. Genetic contributions have been associated with prostate
cancer. However, no single gene is responsible for prostate cancer. Moreover, there
are also reports that link prostate cancer and the use of medications including statins
implicated in decreasing prostate cancer risk
